A day of celebration and remembrance for the Warwick Community Garden and Community Orchard will take place on Sun., Jul. 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Warwick Community Center, located at 11 Hamilton Ave. in Warwick.
Members of the Garden and Orchard will celebrate and also to remember two very special friends, Bill Hess and Gretchen Gibbs. Hess came to the Orchard in 2015 and saw that it needed a lot of work. He revitalized the Orchard Brigade, showed members what needed to be done, and led by doing. Hess passed away in December of 2018. In his memory, the Orchard will be renamed the Bill Hess Community Orchard.
Gibbs is an example of a different kind of doing. A long-time Warwick resident who also died last fall, Gretchen demonstrated her love of this community by leaving money in her will to several local non-profits, including Sustainable Warwick. It is with those funds that both the Garden and Orchard were able to be upgraded.
