The Greenwood Lake PBA hosted a free fishing day on Sun., Jun. 24 in conjunction with the NY DEC’s yearly free fishing day. The event took place at DeFeo’s Marina, located at 672 Jersey Ave. in G.L. The fishing day began at 9 a.m. and drew a large crowd of all ages. The marina provided bait, fishing poles, life vests, and a space to hold the wonderful event.
Overseeing the event were G.L. Police Officer Leanne Malara, Environment Conservation Officer Melissa Burgess from the NY DEC, and Chris Van Vooren and Betsy Cameron, representing the Greenwood Lake Chamber of Commerce. Attendees were treated to hot dogs from Joe and Maureen Anthony, of The Irish Whisper. The G.L. Chamber Of Commerce provided drinks, potato and macaroni salad, and delicious cookies. Greenwood Lake Roasters owners Dave and Yolanda supplied coffee for the adults.
Children were excited about the chance to fish and several species were caught, including sunfish and white and yellow Perch. DEC Officer Burgess assisted Officer Malara with the children and helped to make the event run smoothly.
Prizes and goodie bags, provided by the PBA and the Chamber, were handed out to the children. Prizes given out included fishing poles for the children and goodie bags full of rubber worms and bobbers.
Chamber member Chris Van Vooren stated, “This was a great family event. We all had a lot of fun catching fish and sharing our love of the outdoors with the children of Greenwood Lake.”
