The Warwick Valley High School Class of 1953 will hold their 65th reunion on Sat., Jul. 7 at the Warwick Inn, located at 36 Oakland Ave. in Warwick. Many members of the class may say, “Where has the time gone? It seems like yesterday we were looking forward to graduation.”
Class member Barbara Wilcox Lyons said, “We were a small class that grew up together and we were like a big family. There were some of us from Pine Island, Amity, Little York, and Little Brooklyn who started our schooling in the Pine Island Elementary School and moved on to Warwick High School for the later grades, which means some of us spent our whole 12 years together.
Was there much difference from us then to us today? I guess the girls still look starry eyed over the jock fellows, and those same fellows who focused their eyes on the cheerleaders and teachers are still the same except they are a lot older.
One of the differences would be that we felt much safer in school than students do today. We had a different freedom that we all took for granted. At lunch time some of us would go home if we lived in Warwick. If not, we either headed for Akins with our lunch bags and crowded into a booth, ordered a milkshake and ate our lunch, or we headed out to either the campus across the street for a coke, or just sat out on the lawn and ate lunch. It has been some time since I have been to high school but my great-grandkids tell me things are different today. Which is a shame but then again, when they talk to their grandkids about their years in school, I hope they will have the same nostalgia that we have.
We all have memories that will be with us forever and we can pass down to the next generations what it was like way back when. Did we live in the best of times or do they? I want to believe the ‘50s were the best time ever but only history will tell.”
Any class members who would like to attend the reunion can send an email to Barbara Wilcox at email@example.com and put “class reunion” in the subject line of the email. The Class of 1953 also invites members of the classes of 1952 and 1954 to attend.
