The Town of Warwick Tree Commission held its Fifth Grade Arbor Day poster contest at the Warwick Valley Middle School this year. Seventeen students participated, submitting posters with the theme, “Trees for Bats.”
Patti O’Connor, a fifth grade teacher, at the Middle School, organized the contest, and encouraged students to use their free time to create the posters. This year’s participants are: Jenna Alicea, Ben Blandino, Caron Byrne, Gracyn Cadden, Stephen Wyatt Cirbus, Lily Corcoran, Jillian Daubert, Isabella del Salto, Hannah Gomez, Brooke Kelley, Tommy Knox, Klaus Lindenau, Colin Redpath, Reagan Smith, Maeve Sutliff, Jake Tannar, and Nicholas Zayas.
Middle School teachers select a poster to go to the regional competition, which is held at NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) New Paltz office. DEC staff then vote on a regional winner, which goes on to the state competition in Albany.
This year’s regional winner is Colin Redpath, shown here with his family. The Tree Commission sponsors this contest every year as part of the Town’s Arbor Day celebration and has an artists’ showing at the Town Hall for the artists and their families. Posters will be on display in the Town Hall through the month of April.
