Father Robert Sweeney retired after 25 years of service in Greenwood Lake, Holy Rosary Church. Father Bob, as he is affectionately called was born in Freeport, NY. His mother and father, who was a lawyer and served as the Mayor of Freeport for many years, were a strong inspiration to him.
Father Bob enlisted in the army and served in Heidelberg and Baumholder, Germany in the US 7th Army Troops, and then with the 3rd Cav., which then transferred to Fort Lewis, WA. He then was discharged and came home to Long Island, and attended Hofstra University, where he got his BA.
Soon after graduating he began working for ABC-CBS News, and then went on to work for the Barry Farbur Radio Show, and then for the Chichorel Library Index Publishing Company. Father Bob then began his priesthood in 1974 and completed a residency with John Neuman College in 1976.
He attended St. Joseph seminary in Yonkers. His first assignment as a Priest was at Hyde Park Holy Trinity in Poughkeepsie, NY, and then went on to both St. Joseph in Bronxville, NY and St. John Evangelist in Goshen, NY. After serving those parishes, he came to Greenwood Lake in 1994 and was there for 25 years until his retirement on Sun., Jun. 30.
During this time, he has been the National ANAVC Detachment Chaplain for one year, the National American Legion Department Chaplain, NYC Retired Fire-Fighters Orange County and Hudson Valley Chaplain, 15 years as Mid-Hudson Forensic Institute Chaplain, and Member of the Minisink, Trout Brook Fire Department. For the past 25 years, and presently, he is the Chaplain for the American Legion Arthur Finnegan Post 1446 in Greenwood Lake. Father Bob is fluent in German, loves Opera, is a giant stamp collector, and his parishioners applaud his service and will miss him greatly.
