The Greenwood Lake Middle School kicked off their 2018-2019 school-wide read aloud adventure on Wed., Oct. 10. This year students will be reading, “The Wild Robot,” by Peter Brown.
The book is about a robot named, Roz, that washes ashore on an island and lives amongst the animals. Upon being activated by a group of otters, many interesting adventures and lessons await her. Last year the students read the book “Wonder,” to focus on kindness.
The themes of “The Wild Robot,” will focus on mindfulness this year for the #ChooseMind campaign. The PTSA graciously gifted each family one copy of the book of “The Wild Robot.”
“Many thanks are extended to the PTSA for purchasing the books for us,” said Principal Jeffrey Golubchick.
When students and staff arrived to school on Wednesday morning they were treated to a walk-through of different parts of the set from the book, both the outside and inside of the school were decorated with book scene settings.
Students then gathered in the gym for an assembly to launch the event, with special guest “Roz,” The Robot, making her appearance. Students then proceeded to their homerooms where they learned and discussed mindfulness followed by writing about ways they can be more mindful at school.
“This was a really amazing day and I can’t wait to share more about our work with the book and our focus on mindfulness,” said Principal Golubchick, who also gave a special shout out to the amazing PBIS Team (Positive Behavior Intervention System) and custodial staff for working hard to prepare for the event.
Next month the school will be visited by book author Peter Brown and treated to an assembly.
