Wreaths Across America, an observance to honor the memory of veterans, was held on Sat., Dec. 16 at Veterans Memorial Park in Warwick and at the Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Goshen, NY. Similar ceremonies were also held at Arlington National Cemetery as well as at 1,200 additional locations across the United States, at sea and abroad.
The Warwick Valley Gardeners’ donated an honorary holiday wreath that was placed at the Veterans Monument in Veterans Memorial Park in Warwick. During the ceremony held at the Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, approximately 3,000 wreaths were laid by 200 volunteers at the 19-acre cemetery.
One of the volunteers was Warwick resident Tyler Murtie representing the Orange, Rockland and Sullivan Co. Funeral Directors Association. Murtie’s staff at the Zygmunt-Murtie Funeral and Cremation Service also volunteered to lay wreaths on the graves of Veterans.
“It was my honor to be present and to assist the hundreds of residents and family members who came out to place wreaths this morning. The turnout was simply amazing. Thank you to our veterans for their service,” said Murtie, whose father is buried at the County cemetery.
