Warwick K9 Officer Kevin Halsey and Officer Keith Slesinski conducted a traffic stop on Mon., May 6 on Rte. 94 in the Village of Florida for several vehicle and traffic violations.
According to Police, after interviewing the operator and his passenger, officers received consent to search the vehicle. Officer Halsey deployed his K9 partner, Nikki, who gave a positive indication of the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.
Upon further search of the vehicle, officers found a plastic bag hidden in the engine compartment. The bag contained 250 bags of what was later identified as heroin.
Warwick officers arrested the owner/operator of the vehicle, Steven Scalici, 23, of Warwick, and his passenger, Tiffany Reed, 23, of Sparrowbush, NY.
Scalici was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the third and fourth degrees, both felonies and several vehicle and traffic violations. Reed was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the third and fourth degrees, both felonies.
Scalici and Reed were arraigned by Village of Florida Justice Richard Shuback. Scalici was remanded to Orange County Jail on $15,000 cash bail and Reed was remanded on $1,000 cash bail.
