Over 1,000 athletes showed up to compete under the lights at Warwick High School on Fri., May 10 for the annual Friendship Games. After impressive performances at the Brian Ahearn Meet the previous weekend, the Purple Wave put on another great show with many more personal and season bests.
The girls’ and boys’ 4×100 meter relays both ran season-best times of 51.01 and 45.37 respectively. The teams of Lily Newkirk, Caroline Fatta, Alissa Madura, and Kaeli Thompson, and Michael Moore, Vincent Michelini, Cam Burley, and Jeremy Platt-Strack looked smooth and ready for the championship season.
The 400-meter intermediate hurdles saw two wins for the Wildcats by sophomore standouts Julia Mosier at 69.97 and Cohen Emmerich at 61.44. Senior Michael Mabel ran an awesome 65.17 effort for third place.
In his debut for the steeplechase, All-State cross country junior Behailu Bekele-Arcuri narrowly missed the national qualifying time in the 2,000 meter Steeplechase, running a time of 6:17.84 and finishing first. The rest of the boys’ distance squad continues to impress with another three athletes going sub 5:00 for the first time this season. Look out for the young squad this fall on the cross country course.
Also keep your eyes on the pole vault as modified athletes continue to soar high. Last weekend, Lilly Beattie jumped a middle school record of 9’ and Andrew Cimino cleared 10’6” for a personal record. Both look to follow in the footprints of senior standout Kaeli Thompson, who won the Friendship Games with a solid jump of 13’01”.
The throws team also saw many personal bests including discus and shot put titles from Tristan Peterson. Tremendous efforts by all.
Seniors Kelly Brozowski, Michaela Calandra, Molly Davis, Lauren Fox, Shannon Hegarty, Jillian Hernandez, Lily Newkirk, Syanne Staine, Kaeli Thompson, Nii-Ayi Aryeetey, Jacob Becher, Bryant Berkowitz, Brendan Eder, Zion Ham, Michael Mable, Michael Ollert, Jeremy Platt-Strack, Justin Singh, Luke Soto, and Jeffery Varela-Cordero were thanked by the underclassman for great leadership and great commitment to the team.
