Lena Jodry, a seventh-grade student from Greenwood Lake, recently hosted a fundraiser called “Together We Rise,” – an organization that helps children in foster care.
Lena, who is just 12 years old, loves to help others. She took it upon herself to contact the organization, asking them if she was able to do the fundraiser. The organization was thrilled and allowed her to proceed.
Lena then began to set up the entire fundraiser including the webpage, the place, etc. Later, she received a letter from the organization stating that her fundraiser would raise money for duffle bags to give to foster children. Often, children bring nothing with them when they are placed in foster care.
Each duffel bag costs $25 and Lena’s goal is to reach $300. She is already halfway to her reaching her goal. Each bag will contain items to make the kids feel good and also give them a bag of their own, as many arrive with nothing or with their items in a trash bag.
Lena set up a table at ShopRite displaying a poster she made that explained the purpose of her fundraiser. She spent hours collecting donations and talking to people, many of whom were very generous and interested in what she was doing. Upon completion of her fundraiser she gets the duffel bags and all the supplies, fills them and then deliver them.
Lena is applying for induction into the National Junior Honor Society. She is an active member of the Girl Scouts and participates in the Miss Amazing organization. She always finds time in her busy schedule to help others in need.
“When you help someone else out it makes you feel good! When you make an impact on someone else’s life it just gives you a great feeling! And when I heard that I could help kids in foster care I thought that would be great! I love seeing someone smile and making them happy,” said Lena. “I know some people who have been in foster care and I want to continue to help people throughout my life and make an impact on them because I love making people happy and seeing them smile.”
Lena’s long term goals are to keep helping others and she is thinking of different fundraisers and events that will benefit others.
“Both Debbie and I are extremely proud of our daughter Lena. She’s growing up to be a caring and wonderful young woman and we can’t wait to see what she accomplishes in the future,” said her parents, Steve and Debbie.
