The Greenwood Lake Board of Education held their regular business meeting on Wed., Dec. 19. Prior to the official start of the meeting, the Board, along with a filled gymnasium of attendees, were treated to elementary school students performing holiday songs followed by the middle school jazz band giving a musical performance of holiday music.
Middle School Update
Middle School Principal Jeffrey Golubchick gave an update on the Middle School happenings. Principal Golubchick thanked the Board of Education for their support. The Middle School recently held their winter concert and it was a very successful event. Many thanks go out to Laura Kroll and Lee Compton and all the students for a fantastic concert performance.
The first round of explorations took place on Wed., Dec. 5 and sixth through eighth grade students attended an assembly that addressed the dangers of vaping which helped increase awareness of the dangers. A second round of explorations is forthcoming.
Principal Golubchick wished everyone a “Happy Holiday.”
Elementary School Update
Principal Dianne Connolly updated the Board on the busy happenings at the Elementary School. She reported that the students have been practicing hard to prepare for their upcoming holiday winter concert. All the decorations for the holiday event were made by the students including trees, Menorahs, Rudolph, and snowflakes.
The Greenwood Lake Garden Center donated beautiful holiday decorations to make the stage even more festive. Staff and students also held a food drive and collected over 325 items that will be donated to the food pantry. The drive was continuing through Thurs., Dec. 20 with more donations expected. Principal Connolly expressed her gratitude to all the community members who donated to the pantry.
Several presentations were made to the Board during the meeting. The first was given by Superintendent Dr. Steven Cohen. Dr. Cohen discussed the replacement of seven doors to help with the implementation of security regulations. The Board approved this project.
Dr. Cohen stated that the G.L. and Warwick Police security presence in both schools has been working great. The departments are extremely cooperative and everything is going smoothly.
Ann Lierow, the Assistant Superintendent of Business, gave a presentation regarding the addition of ADA ramps to the Middle School parking lots. This includes creating a ramp, adding a curb, a crosswalk, and striping.
The final presentation was given by Sarah Hadden, the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Technology, regarding the Capital Project Update. Hadden reported that the funds were allocated for District-wide renovations, reconstruction, construction, and improvements to both buildings and facilities. Updates included security renovations, classrooms, and offices. Each upgrade helped create a better working area for both students and staff. Others improvements included the gym floor in the Middle School and the field was refurbished.
Village Liaison Report
Village Trustee Katheleen Holder gave the following updates:
- 39th Annual Greenwood Lake Soccer Club, Jan. 5 and Jan. 6, G.L. Middle School.
- L. Chamber of Commerce presents the Winter Carnival, Thomas P. Morahan Town Beach, Feb. 16 and Feb. 17. There will be activities, food, vendors and entertainment.
- The second annual G.L. Lake Winter Classic, Jan. 19 and Jan. 20, make up dates are Feb. 9 and Feb. 10. Location: back lake right off Waterstone Rd. by Grace Lutheran Church. There will be both competitive and recreational divisions. For more information send an email to email@example.com.
PTSA President Melissa Apuzzo reported that the Candy Cane Holiday Shops at the Elementary and Middle Schools were successful. Students had the opportunity to purchase gifts for the holiday season.
Spirit Wear was distributed for the holiday season.
The Board announced the appointment of Pasqualina (Lina) Polchinski to the position of Director of Curriculum and Instruction, effective Jan. 21.

The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Wed., Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Middle School, located at 1247 Lakes Rd. in Monroe, NY.
