Six months ago the Partners in Education (PIE) program in the Warwick Valley Central School District launched Warwick’s Angel Baker program. To date, nearly 20 businesses, clubs, and organizations and 30 families have opened their doors and given their time or donations to bake for deployed American soldiers monthly.
We have seen particular generosity from Jean Claude’s Patisserie, which exceeded expectations by baking over 12 dozen delicious treats with the Lions Club; Noble Pies, which not only baked but taught the Warwick Cub Scout Tiger Den about baking; Wolfie’s, which held an initial fundraiser to start the program; Greystone Programs Club Atlas for families living with developmental disabilities which bakes their own treat box every month; Satin Ice for all of the specialized fondant donations; the Knights of Columbus and the VFW for monetary donations; and Track 7 in Warwick, which ships every single box for free. This is truly a community initiative.
Ten men and women from all over the US, many with young families, currently stationed in harsh conditions, each received about four dozen cookies to share with their units across the Armed Forces. That is over 500 cookies and over 100 customized cards from the children.
These brave Americans were able to enjoy some free moments with baked goods in themes meaningful to them such as sports, music, the outdoors, and even comics, thanks to the generosity of the greater Warwick Valley community.
Baking sessions are held monthly throughout the area. Anyone of any age and any skill level can participate and there is no cost to participate. Space is limited, so early sign up is encouraged at www.tinyurl.com/Warwick-Angel-Bakers-2019.
Donations are also needed to help keep this program going into 2020. The following are some of the needed donations: kitchen space with ovens; ingredients such as Pam, chocolate chips, sprinkles, nuts, Crisco, and yeast; accompaniments such as individual creamers, single serve coffee/tea and sugar packets; thank you cards, stamps, markers, glue, and scissors; supplies including large mixing bowls, silicone spatulas, and large sheet pans; cleaning supplies such as paper towels, sponges, steel wool, hand wipes, and multi-surface cleanser; and others items such as hot plates, silpat, storage bins, gift cards to Shoprite/Walmart to purchase special ingredients; and wrapping supplies.
