The Warwick Valley High School (WVHS) Crew Team has had a very exciting season this year with many boats earning multiple medals.
At the State Championship held at Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs May 13 and 14, four boats from the WVHS Crew Team earned third place medals and three had the chance to go to SRAA Nationals (Scholastic Rowing Association of America) in Camden, NJ. With over 80 teams competing, the girls lightweight eight, boys lightweight four, girls novice eight, and boys pair were all able to win bronze. The girls lightweight eight, boys lightweight four, and girls eight were all invited to attend Nationals in Camden but unfortunately due to lack of equipment with another race the same weekend, only the boys lightweight four could attend. Throughout the weekend it was cold and rainy but that didn’t damper the team’s spirits. Water conditions were close to perfect for both racing days and most crews raced tight races.
The Warwick Crew team participated in the Hudson Valley Rowing League (HVRL) Championships on Sat., Jun. 3. Warwick definitely ended their season on a high note. The girls eight with stroke Kira Poulson, Caleigh Rubin, Kelly Hennessy, Alessia Losa, Josie Romano, Annie Demetroules, Kaylee Oelofse, Seana Morgan and cox Abby Housberg crushed their competition to win the gold. The boys eight with stroke Ben Zakzewski, Will Duma, Jacob Gaydos, Andrew Aerberli, Cole Osborn, Josh Manheim, Brian Bower, Brendan Hallinan and cox Zack Bauman had a nail biting race but took the gold, and both boats were the HVRL Champions of 2017.
Overall, The WVHS Crew Team has had an amazing race season and the members have begun to make their name a force to be reckoned with.
On Wed., Jun. 7, six dedicated senior members of the team were recognized and given awards at the WVHS sports awards night. Kira Poulson and Ben Zakzewski were both awarded the Most Valuable Rower award, Annie Demetroules and William Duma were awarded the Coach’s Award, and Eve Hammerle and Brendan Hallinan were awarded the Most Improved award.
