The Warwick High School track and field team participated on Fri., May 31 in the Section 9 State Qualifers at Middletown High School in Middletown, NY, which will also host the New York State Championships on Fri., Jun. 7 and Sat., Jun. 8. It was a successful day for the flying purple and gold singlet as many personal best performances took center stage when the team needed them the most.
The lone qualifier on the boys’ side was Behailu Bekele-Arcuri. Behailu took second place in the 3,200 meter run, earning him a spot to compete in the State Championships. He also doubled back with tremendous heart to win the 1,600 meter in a time of 4:20.89. Behailu will compete on both days of the championships, with the 3,200 meter being held on Fri., Jun. 7 at 5:30 p.m. and the 1,600 meter being held on Sat., Jun. 8 at 11:10 a.m.
Indoor National Pole Vault Champion Kaeli Thompson was tremendous again with a victory clear of 13’3 to qualify. Kaeli will be competing in the pole vault on Fri. at 3:30 p.m.
Sophomore Katherine Smith qualified in the 1,500 meter run with a personal best time of 4:37.81, taking the win. Katherine will compete in the 1,500 meter on Fri. at 11:20 a.m.
The Warwick Valley girls’ relays were off the charts as the 4×800 meter qualified for the State championships for the first time since 2012. The team of Katherine Smith, Kristin Thompson, Simone Sullivan and LeighAnne Tanner ran a season best of 9:25.79, which currently ranks in the top 10 in New York State. The 4×800 meter action is set to kick off at 2:45 p.m. on Sat.
The 4×400 meter was up to their old tricks as the number two-ranked team in New York State ran a 4:11.27 to take fourth at the qualifier, earning a bid to the championships. The team of Alissa Madura, Caroline Fatta, Jade Liguori, and Julia Mosier advance and will represent four of the six names on this week’s card.
Other notable performances were turned in by Junior Dan Walker with a personal best in the 1,600 meter with a 4:37.73. Freshman Emily Cauda also had a personal best in the triple jump with a leap of 31’5″.
