The Lady Ratz seventh grade basketball team from Florida, NY won the GymRat Challenge during the weekend of Jun. 16 to 17, held at the University of Albany, with a standing of 5-0. One of the largest annual youth basketball tournaments in the country, the GymRat Challenge is also one of four U.S. Open Basketball Championship qualifiers for the national tournament to be held in Westfield, IN in July.
Coached by Dustin Van Lieu, the Lady Ratz team is comprised of young women from Monroe, Florida, Chester, Goshen, Warwick, and Wallkill. The 35-33 victory in the final game was highlighted by a half-court, buzzer-beating shot that not only won the tournament for the Lady Ratz, but was also featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter as the number two top play for Sun., Jun. 17. It takes a massive team effort to accomplish such a notable win. Every member on the Lady Ratz roster was dedicated to working hard for months in order to achieve this level of success.
