The boys’ from Greenwood Lake’s Holy Rosary CYO basketball team have something to be excited about – they came in first place this season. The boys’ defeated every team in the best two out of three game series with the exception of one team, which they beat three times.
The boys who are currently in sixth grade have been playing with the CYO team for the last five years, under the direction of Head Coach Joseph DiMattina, and Assistant Coaches, Kevin Tuhy, Bill Siebert, and Pete Onderdonk. Members of the team include: Nico DiMattina, Joey Tuhy, Jimmy Onderdonk, Dennis Holder, Dallas Kaminski, Luca Siebert, Jacob Creighton, Liam Marrow, Jay Sorrentino, and Daniel Alexander.
During the first two years that the boys learned how to play, they practiced several times a week and built up their skills with the help and leadership of Marc Kaminski. The last three years the boys’ have been playing competitively and travel to various schools.
This season the team lost their first and third games then went on to win the last nine games. The key to their success, besides having very dedicated coaches, has been that they are maturing over the years. They play as a team defensively and individually.
“I loved watching them grow as individuals and as a team,” said Head Coach Joe DiMattina.
Assistant Coach Kevin Tuhy said that Joe DiMattina has done an amazing job as the Head Coach in keeping the kids motivated.
Tuhy added, “From winning one game in the first year to starting zero to three this year to winning nine straight to take first place. The kids never gave up and showed great spirit each and every week. They kept grinding week after week. We are proud of all of them and thankful for Joe’s ability to keep them moving forward.”
