Following multiple cancellations over this past week, the Warwick High School girls’ varsity basketball team was able to maintain their winning streak.
On Fri., Jan. 19, they played against Kingston, a worthy adversary. This game marked a 15-game winning streak and the section title is something that these girls are looking forward to having a shot at.
Last year they were close, but lost to Monroe by one point. This season the team is stronger, in part due to Warwick senior Emily Welling. In previous years, she had primarily been a defensive player. But this year, she has come into her own as a dually offensive force.
At a crucial moment in the game, Welling landed a hook shot, earning three points for her team and gaining the edge over Kingston. Both Welling and teammate Lauren Desrats led the team with 10 points each.
Earlier in the week, Warwick senior Lauren Desrats joined the 1,000 point club during a game against Red Hook. This record has only been reached one other time in the past 20 years. Desrats now has 1,017 total points.
The Lady Wildcats celebrated their teammates milestone on Mon., Jan. 15 and beat Red Hook, 48-30.
Supporters can cheer on the Wildcats and celebrate a hopeful 16-game winning streak on Fri., Jan. 26 as they play New Rockford-Sheyenne.
