The Warwick Valley High School varsity tennis doubles team (wild card) of Sammy Killin and Gabby Donohue took the Section 9 Tournament title for Warwick on Fri., Oct. 19 at Match Point Tennis in Goshen, NY. Section 9 is one of 11 sections of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc., (NYSPHSAA), which includes approximately 780 schools across New York state.
The two-day tournament where the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) met the Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL) was held on Thurs., Oct. 18 and Fri.,Oct. 19 for both singles and doubles competition. Top doubles seeds were as follows: Killin and Donohue, of Warwick, #1; Jaros/DelSalto, of Marlboro, NY, #2; Ghobadian/Menoutis, of Warwick, #3; and Ma/Li, of Spackenkill, NY, #4. The top four seeded groups all moved on to the semi-final rounds. Killin/Donohue vs. Ma/Li and Gobadian/Menoutis vs. Jaros/DelSalto competed on day two of the section 9 tournament.
Warwick’s Killin and Donohue forged ahead, defeating Spackenkill (6-0, 7-5). In a separate competition, the Marlboro team, after a grueling, tension packed, two-and-a-half-hour match, defeated the Warwick team of Ghobadian/Menoutis (6-3, 3-6, 6-2), advancing them to the final round against Warwick’s Killin and Donohue.
In the final round, Killin and Donohue easily cruised ahead taking the Section 9 title and the championship against Marlboro in a mere 38-minutes (6-0, 6-2). Meanwhile, the consolation round was being played by the #3 seed (Warwick) and the #4 seed (Spackenkill). Of the 16 eligible doubles teams playing in the Sectionals, only the top three qualify for state competition. It was a close and palm-sweating final, but Warwick’s Ghobadian and Menoutis were victorious against Spackenkill’s Ma and Li (6-3, 6-3).
At the beginning of the season, Coach Sue Filingeri asked each of the players to write down their goals and Filingeri kept those index cards throughout the entire season. After Warwick’s amazing wins, the Coach congratulated her players on fulfilling their goals. Each player had written, “Make it to States!”
The last time the Warwick Valley High School girls’ varsity tennis team won Section 9 was in 2013. Congratulations to Sophomore Gabby Donohue and Freshman Sammy Killin and to Ava Ghobadian and Stephanie Menoutis, both Seniors, at Warwick Valley High School.
