Members of the Greenwood Lake Union Free School District Board of Education met via zoom on Mon., Mar. 15 for their monthly meeting. Superintendent Sarah Hadden pointed out that the School District has several unused snow days left. Hadden suggested that the Friday before Memorial Day and some days in the last week of June be added to the school calendar for days off from school. Once a decision is made notifications will be sent to families next month to allow proper planning.

Also, at the meeting it was noted that Modified Sports are taking place and the first soccer game of the season was held and went very well. Discussions of streaming the games is underway, currently only two spectators are allowed at home games and none for away games due to COVID-19 policies.

Hadden also presented the idea of hosting graduation for eighth graders outside on a Saturday afternoon in mid-June. This time frame would not interfere with high school graduations and also allow students to have an in-person ceremony while following COVID-19 protocols. Once a decision is made, Middle School Principal Jeffrey Golubchick will send out an email with save the date information.

Golubchick also provided the latest happenings at the middle school. The fourth and fifth graders are going to start helping in the school’s garden at the end of the school day. Only one cohort will go in at a time and this will be a great way to maintain the beautiful garden.   Chorus and band programs will begin next week. Band practices will be held in the cafeteria and chorus practices will take place in the gym.

Elementary School Principal Dianne Connolly provided updates on the elementary school happenings. Plans to welcome next year’s Kindergarten class are underway. Registration packets have been sent out and announcements have been sent to the local newspapers, School Messenger emails, Facebook posts, and postcards were mailed to all families. Enrollment packets were mailed out last week.

On St. Patrick’s Day, elementary students celebrated “Lucky to be a Laker” Day. Along with wearing School spirit wear and St. Patrick’s attire, staff and students took time during the day to reflect upon all the reasons to be grateful for going to school and living in this wonderful community. Teachers were given shamrock cutouts and students wrote and drew their favorite reasons to be thankful.  All of the responses are on display in the main hallway of the school building.
