Last month, it was revealed Orange County had improperly over-distributed sales tax revenue to municipalities. The oversight could cost municipalities at least $20 million this year. Our cities, towns, and villages already adopted their budgets and are relying on that miscalculated money for necessary services — without which, property taxes would skyrocket and services would be slashed.
As soon as I was made aware of this error, I introduced legislation with our state delegation to address the inaccuracy. It passed the Senate and Assembly this past week and now heads to the Governor’s desk.
This legislation is a priority for me because, left unaddressed, this error would cause havoc in our communities. I remain optimistic we can see this legislation signed into law by July and our municipalities made whole once again.
