Howard Fitts Expected to be Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison
Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that Howard Fitts, age 37, of New Windsor, pled guilty in Orange County Court to Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in the First Degree. At sentencing on November 17, 2026, it is expected that he will be sentenced to eighteen (18) years in prison, to be followed by twenty (20) years of post-release supervision. As part of the sentence, Fitts will also be registered as a sex offender under the New York Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA). At the plea proceedings, Fitts admitted that between December, 2024 and May, 2025 he engaged in two or more acts of sexual conduct with a child less than thirteen years old.
District Attorney Hoovler thanked the Town of New Windsor Police Department for their investigation which led to the arrest of the defendant.
“This defendant’s vile admitted conduct deserves the harsh punishment he will soon face,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “Cases which involve allegations such as those seen here are incredibly challenging for investigators and I commend the dedicated work of the police officers and prosecutors who secured a just outcome in this case. We will continue to pursue justice for victims and to give a voice to the innocent children in these types of cases. We will not stop in our pursuit of sexual predators. Victims of sexual assault should know that we will do everything in our power to hold offenders accountable for their actions.”
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Christine DeModna.
A criminal charge is merely an allegation by the police that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
