County Executive Neuhaus Names Warwick’s Own Evelyn Card Citizen of the Month
Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus has announced that Evelyn Card, a town of Warwick resident and co-host of Food for Thought on WTBQ, has been recognized as Orange County’s Citizen of the Month for September in honor of her extraordinary lifetime of service, unwavering commitment to her hometown, and enduring contributions to generations of Warwick families.
Neuhaus praised Card’s lifetime of service. “This long-standing member of our community has helped to make Orange County the special place that it is,” said Neuhaus. “Evelyn Card’s lifetime of empowerment and service has greatly benefited the Warwick and Orange County communities.”
For more than twenty years, Card has been volunteering at the Warwick Valley Dispatch. Over the years, she learned virtually every aspect of newspaper production, from proofreading and page layout to developing narratives and sorting. Card now prepares thousands of newspapers each week for delivery throughout the community and across the country.
Card’s years at the Dispatch have had a positive impact on generations of colleagues and readers. Recognizing her extraordinary commitment to the community, the Warwick Valley Dispatch editorial staff and its publisher, together with WTBQ owners and Food for Thought hosts, nominated Evelyn for the honor.
“At 99 years young, Evelyn Card is not simply a witness to Warwick’s history, but an important part of it,” said Stephen Kitar, co-host of the Food for Thought radio show.
“She represents everything a community newspaper should stand for: loyalty, integrity, memory, and service. To us, she has always been a treasure. We are grateful that Orange County is now honoring her as one,” added Eugene Wright, third-generation publisher of the historic community newspaper.
Orange County proudly celebrates residents whose actions strengthen the community through compassion, service, and leadership. Card began her work in the Warwick community as a building secretary at Kings Elementary, and she served in the district for nearly 25 years, greeting students, parents, and teachers with her welcoming smile.
“When people give back over multiple generations, it strengthens their community,” Neuhaus added. “Evelyn has impacted countless Warwick families throughout her life, and she truly represents the best of Orange County.”
Beginning in the 1960s, Card was an integral member of the Queens Village Queens, Warwick’s nationally recognized all-girls Drum and Bugle Corps, managing the corps’ uniforms while traveling throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. At a time when opportunities for young women in extracurricular activities were limited, the organization provided hundreds of girls with the chance to develop confidence, discipline, and teamwork.
“Evelyn Card embodies the spirit of Warwick, steadfast, generous, and deeply rooted in our community,” said Town of Warwick Supervisor Jesse Dwyer. “Her decades of service have helped preserve the stories, traditions, and character that make our town special.”
