Tyler Olsen Previously Pled Guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree and Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree
Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that Tyler Olsen, 32, of Walden, was sentenced in Orange County Court to an aggregate term of eight and one half (8.5) years in prison to be followed by five (5) years of post-release supervision relative to his previous guilty pleas to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree and Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree.
As alleged in documents filed and statements made in court, on November 5, 2024 at approximately 5:30 a.m., members of the City of Newburgh Police Department conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle observed committing a violation of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. Inside of the car, police observed four (4) individuals, including Olsen who was a rear passenger. Police later recovered a loaded pistol from the trunk, which was linked to Olsen by DNA recovered from the grip and trigger. While that matter was pending, on May 29, 2025 at approximately 10:30 a.m., a detective from the Town of New Windsor Police Department observed Olsen slumped over the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked at a business. Upon approaching, the detective observed signs consistent with the use of narcotics and later recovered a quantity of cocaine from within the vehicle. At the plea proceedings, Olsen admitted to attempting to possess both the loaded firearm as well as the narcotics.
District Attorney Hoovler thanked the City of Newburgh Police Department and the Town of New Windsor Police Department for their investigations which led to the arrests of the defendant.
“The significant sentence imposed on this defendant has ensured that a repeat offender, and the dangerous drugs and firearm he illegally possessed, has been removed from our streets,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “It is through the diligence of our law enforcement partners that we are able to hold offenders like this one accountable. We remain committed to the pursuit of gun and drug offenders because we see the deadly consequences of their crimes in our communities.”
The cases are being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Peter Fernandez.
A criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
