The annual Greenwood Lake PBA Kids Fishing Derby returned to Thomas P. Morahan Waterfront Park on Saturday, June 20, drawing dozens of young anglers and their families for a memorable morning of fishing, community spirit, and outdoor recreation.
Open to children ages 15 and younger, the popular event once again provided local youngsters with an opportunity to experience the excitement of fishing while enjoying one of Greenwood Lake’s greatest natural resources. Throughout the morning, children lined the shoreline with fishing rods in hand, hoping to land the day’s biggest catch while spending quality time with family and friends.
The Greenwood Lake Police Benevolent Association organized the event as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting local youth and strengthening community connections. In addition to the fishing activities, participants enjoyed complimentary refreshments provided by the PBA’s “Greenie Weenie” cart, which served free hot dogs, ice cream, chips, and cold drinks to attendees.
Organizers described the derby as a tremendous success, highlighted by strong community participation and a festive atmosphere that brought together residents of all ages.
“It was great to see so many families and members of our community enjoying a day on the water and creating lasting memories,” said Greenwood Lake Mayor, Tom Howley. “Several participants reeled in perch, bass, and other species from our lake. We hope that the young families will continue to enjoy our lake’s resources for years to come and discover how much fun a hobby like fishing can become.”
The PBA also extended special recognition to the Greenwood Lake Lions Club for its continued support and generosity. The partnership between the two organizations has helped make the annual fishing derby a longstanding community tradition and demonstrates the value of local volunteer organizations working together for the benefit of area families.
Events such as the fishing derby provide children with opportunities to learn patience, sportsmanship, and an appreciation for the outdoors while fostering a sense of community involvement. For many participants, the event has become a cherished annual tradition that marks the beginning of summer in Greenwood Lake.
The Greenwood Lake PBA thanked all of the volunteers, sponsors, parents, and participants who helped make the day possible and expressed its appreciation for the enthusiastic turnout. Organizers are already looking forward to welcoming young anglers back to the lake for next year’s derby and another day of family fun on the waterfront.
