It was an honor to celebrate the successful completion of this year’s Junior Police Academy and to recognize an outstanding group of young people who demonstrated enthusiasm, respect, teamwork, and a genuine commitment to learning.
This week marked the conclusion of our second session of the Junior Police Academy, where our deputies conducted a 2-week program at Orange-Ulster BOCES in Goshen. The first session included children in grades 3-5, while the second session was for students in grades 6-8.
Each session was packed with hands-on activities and classroom instruction. Every day involved physical fitness, drill ceremonies, life lessons, and competitions. The cadets learned CPR, emergency medical services (EMS), online/social media safety, character building, teamwork, and healthy habits. They enjoyed demonstrations from our K-9 Unit, Special Operations Group, Motor Unit, 911 operators, New York State Police accident reconstructionists, the Orange County Attorney’s Office, and our partners at Orange County Stop DWI. Each representative discussed the importance of their careers in relation to law enforcement and their impact on youth and their futures. Cadets also had the opportunity to meet deputies and first responders who shared their experiences and answered questions about the responsibilities and rewards of public service.
However, the Junior Police Academy is about much more than just learning what deputies do daily. It is designed to build confidence, strengthen character, encourage good decision-making, and foster positive relationships between our youth and law enforcement. Programs like the Junior Police Academy help create lasting connections and inspire the next generation of leaders, whether they choose a career in law enforcement or another path of service.
