As your Sheriff, I will keep residents updated on public safety and provide ways to protect yourself and your family.
Beware of scammers who impersonate law enforcement officials and claim victims have outstanding warrants for failing to appear for jury duty. These scammers may reach out by phone, email, or text message, using threats of arrest, fines, or other penalties to instill fear and pressure you to act quickly. Please be aware that these claims are FALSE.
“The Orange County Commissioner of Jurors Office will never call, email, or text anyone demanding payment of any kind,” said Commissioner Molly O’Donnell. “These scammers rely on fear and urgency to pressure people into acting quickly. Official jury duty information is provided only through the New York State Unified Court System at www.nyjuror.gov.”
If you receive a call demanding payment or personal information related to jury service, do not send money, gift cards, or wire transfers, and never share personal or financial information, including your Social Security number, bank information, or credit card details. Do not allow callers to pressure, threaten, or intimidate you into making a quick decision. Instead, hang up immediately, report the scam to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and verify any jury-related information only through the official New York State juror website at nyjuror.gov.
Scammers aim to create panic by using official-sounding language and pressuring you to act before you’ve had time to think. If someone contacts you claiming to be a member of the Sheriff’s Office, hang up and reach out to our office directly at (845) 862-6399
