Fall brings beautiful scenery, seasonal activities, and increased hazards for motorists. In Orange County, the combination of stunning open roads and a large hunting population can create dangerous situations.
As fall begins, we experience shorter daylight hours, rainfall, wet leaves, fog, and fluctuating temperatures. Together, these factors create additional challenges for drivers. Wet leaves can make roads slippery, while fog and darkness reduce visibility and reaction time.
Hunting season is officially underway, which means hunters are entering wooded and rural areas, stirring up deer and increasing their activity as they move between fields and roadways. Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, when visibility is already limited, and many motorists are commuting to and from work. Drivers should use extra caution on rural roads and near deer-crossing signs. It’s important to reduce your speed in these areas, scan the road and shoulders ahead, and use high-beam headlights when appropriate.
Remember that deer often travel in groups. If one crosses the road, slow down and watch carefully for others that may follow. Always wear your seat belt, stay focused on the road, and avoid distractions.
Hunters must all do their part in keeping the community safe. Please follow all applicable hunting laws and regulations, respect property boundaries, and handle, transport, and store firearms safely and legally. Whenever possible, use designated parking areas and avoid creating hazards for passing motorists.
As Orange County Sheriff, I encourage all residents and visitors to drive responsibly, remain aware of their surroundings, and take the extra time needed to arrive safely. A few simple precautions can significantly protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians, hunters, and our entire community.
