A Wet Mess

Fans of the NY Jets and Giants were fired up heading into their Halloween weekend matchup only to be let down on both sides. The Jets came out with the win, 13-10 in overtime on a game-winning field goal from Greg Zuerlein. It was rainy, it was chilly.  The Giants had a 3-point lead with 24 seconds to go before a dumb penalty and soft coverage saw the Jets drive down to tie the game at the end of regulation. There is a ton to unpack in this game. The Giants started Tyrod Taylor because they ruled starter Daniel OUT on Friday, when Jones woke up Sunday and was cleared to play, he could not because he was ruled OUT already. Then, Taylor got hurt on a scramble play and was taken to a hospital for a rib injury. Insert, Danny… I mean Tommy DeVito to play QB. DeVito was born and raised in Cedar Grove, NJ and played at Don Bosco Prep in high school. Brian Daboll and the staff showed 0 faith in the practice squad QB as the driving rain soaked MetLife Stadium. DeVito did lead a touchdown drive, one that saw 11 runs and 1 pass as DeVito scampered in for the score. The Jets saw some scary injury news as well, losing their top 2 centers to injury including starter Connor McGovern who dislocated his knee cap. Their first offensive play with the 3rd-string center was a fumble, recovered by the Giants. Both defenses flew around the field and forced, what felt like, 100 punts during the game. Oftentimes, when there is a stellar game that comes down to OT and the final play, fans utter the phrase, “wow, it stinks someone has to lose this game.” Well, Sunday was a glimpse into the reverse. I found myself sitting there saying, “wow, they both deserve to lose today.” Neither offense showed much life at all. Keep making excuses for Zach Wilson, but he was terrible in this game until the final 24 seconds. Running backs Breece Hall and Saquon Barkley were the storylines. The Jets were as undisciplined as I could ever remember, and the Giants would not go for a 4th and 1 to end the game. Both coaches should be scratching their heads trying to figure out what they just watched. Despite the result, I don’t feel like Jets fans should be more confident today nor should Giants fans feel like this team can only win 4 games this season. Both teams need to answer monster questions as the season progresses. For both fanbases, hockey season has started well for the Rangers and Devils, so when these inevitably teams disappoint you, check out some hockey!
