An Ode to Sports

Sports

By Ryan “The Goose” Gosiker

RyanThis is one of my favorite articles to write and I feel like I should make it a yearly tradition. I want to take this opportunity and this space today to thank the sports world. If you have followed this column for a while or just recently started, you know we cover all topics from the good to the bad to the pretty to the ugly. Unfortunately, sometimes, it feels like this article comes off negative and points at only what is wrong with a given topic. Today, in this edition, I want it to be a celebration as the Holiday Season is upon us. If you listen to my sports show with Zach Kruk on Saturdays, you will hear the phrase, “sports is the gift that keeps on giving.” I say it every show during my opening. I mean it every single time I say it. The sports world delivers drama not even the Kardashians could compare to when you discuss free agency, trades, demanded trades, teammates fighting, leaked information, and so much more. I never walk into any sports conversation thinking, “man, there really is nothing to talk about” because there always is at least one. Look at last week. Aaron Rodgers likely won’t return this year despite telling everyone he would just so he can look like a hero. Sean McDermott of the Buffalo Bills used a reference to the 9-11 hijackers to make an example about teamwork. Ron DeSantis put aside $1 million dollars in taxpayer money for if Florida State University wants to sue the NCAA or College Football Playoff Committee for not putting them in the Final 4. The Tommy DeVito story continues to grow. A security guard got in a scuffle with an opposing player and had to be ejected. Juan Soto became a Yankee and Shohei Ohtani signed a contract for $700 million dollars. Folks, I did not just describe a month or even a year in the sports world. That was ONE WEEK and there are likely minor stories I left out. The drama, the passion, the energy, the stadiums, the tailgates, the roars of cheers, and even the boos. Heck, we even introduced the “Swifties” to the NFL (the jury is still out on if this was positive or not). There is always entertainment and the next game to look forward to. I thank sports every day. I am grateful for the luxury it provides people in being the break away from reality that people often need. I thank sports for my job. I feel like the luckiest guy alive because sports provides such a platform and an audience that allows me to express my creative ideas and (whether you love them or not) my opinions. Thank you sports!
