Distracted Driving and You

Police and Fire

Sheriff-Photo-2--e1708695452816 Distracted Driving and YouDid you know that distracted driving claimed the lives of 3,208 people and injured 315,167 people in 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)?

These statistics are alarming. As your Sheriff, I am reminding you that checking a text message or answering a phone call while driving is not worth the risk. The only thing you should focus on when you are behind the wheel is safe driving.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office relies on essential partnerships with various agencies and organizations that share our mission. Some of our most important collaborations are with Orange County STOP DWI and Traffic Safety, the NHTSA, and the Governors’ Traffic Safety Committee. These partnerships are essential for the success of our community’s road safety initiatives.

Through grant-funded campaigns, we work closely with our traffic safety partners to allocate additional resources for traffic enforcement and to raise public awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. These enforcement periods and campaigns are driven by statistics that highlight trends and areas needing attention. Our partnerships enable us to access valuable resources, funding, and expertise that enhance our efforts.

We encourage residents to participate in these initiatives and support efforts by being accountable and taking responsibility for their actions when behind the wheel. If you are in a car with someone who is distracted, don’t hesitate to speak up. Your voice can make all the difference. Be a good role model and set a good example for the young passengers in your vehicle. Do not make the mistake of showing them that distracted driving is acceptable. Let’s count on each other and work together to keep our roads safe!
