MIDDLETOWN — A massive four-alarm fire tore through a commercial building in the City of Middletown on Wednesday afternoon, drawing firefighters and emergency crews from across Orange County in one of the larger fire responses in the region this year.
The fire was reported at approximately 4:20 p.m. at 17–39 Midland Avenue Extension in the City of Middletown. According to the City of Middletown Fire Department, crews arrived within minutes to find heavy black smoke and intense fire conditions coming from the building.
Due to the size of the structure, difficult interior conditions, and limited access points, a second alarm was quickly sounded, followed by a third and then fourth alarm as additional manpower and equipment were requested.
Regional Fire Departments Respond
Fire departments from across Orange County responded to assist at the scene or to provide standby coverage for the City of Middletown while local crews were tied up at the fire.
Departments assisting included units from Slate Hill, Mechanicstown, Circleville, Howells, Silver Lake, Pocatello, Goshen, Otisville, Bloomingburg, Montgomery, Bullville, and Washington Heights, among others.
The large response is typical for multi-alarm fires, where additional departments are called not only to fight the fire but also to cover other emergency calls in surrounding communities.
Fire Under Control After Two Hours
After more than two hours of firefighting, crews were able to bring the blaze under control. The scene was cleared at approximately 6:49 p.m.
Officials reported no injuries to civilians or emergency responders, which firefighters described as fortunate given the intensity of the fire and the conditions inside the building.
Cause Under Investigation
A preliminary investigation indicates the fire may have started accidentally during work being performed in the building’s basement, though the cause remains under investigation.
Fire officials said the structure sustained significant damage.
A Reminder of Regional Mutual Aid
Large fires like this highlight the importance of the mutual aid system across Orange County, where fire departments routinely assist each other during major emergencies. When large incidents occur in one municipality, neighboring departments respond both to the scene and to cover the area left temporarily without its primary fire protection.
This system often brings together firefighters from a dozen or more departments during major incidents, particularly in cities like Middletown where larger commercial structures present additional firefighting challenges.
The investigation into the fire remains ongoing.
