The Warwick Historical Society will host a physically distanced but socially connected public tour of some of the most historic properties in the Village of Warwick on Sat., Aug. 29 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Upstairs in Baird’s Tavern, located at 103 Main St. in Warwick, attendees will view where Martha Washington, the nation’s First Lady stayed while traveling to visit her husband during the Revolutionary War. Hear the tales of the militia, hiding and practicing in secret in the attic of the Colonial Tavern.
Step back in time at the Shingle House, located at 9 Forester Ave., the oldest house in the Village of Warwick. View the ongoing archaeological dig site and pieces of artifacts that have been unearthed over the years, revealing the story of the house and its occupants.
Learn about the growth of the railroad in Warwick and the effects this had on the local industries and population while exploring the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway caboose. Catch a glimpse of the agriculture exhibit in the Sly Barn, with household and farm items common yesterday and today.
Visit the Old School Baptist Meeting House, the iconic white church atop the knoll in the lovely Lewis Park at Main and High Streets in the Village. With its unique architectural designs and beautiful original windows, the church is still used for weddings, celebrations, and christenings as well as Veteran remembrance ceremonies, performances and concerts, and is the site of the annual community carol sing-along on Christmas Eve.
The Warwick Historical Society has been in existence since 1906, preserving and celebrating the history of the Town of Warwick and engaging and educating the public regarding things of historical relevance. New members are always welcome.
