CONGESTION PRICING: HIGHWAY ROBBERY FOR COMMUTERS

Politics

A Column from the Desk of Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C-Deerpark)

When the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) initially proposed the “congestion pricing” measure to alleviate traffic in lower Manhattan, I was utterly astonished. It’s undeniable that navigating through Manhattan by car is an ordeal. However, what troubled me most was the apparent disregard shown by the city and the MTA towards commuters—be they cops, firefighters, healthcare heroes, construction workers, and others. Despite the widespread backlash against the initiative, beginning June 30, drivers entering Manhattan will be required to pay a minimum of $15. Like many residing in the Hudson Valley, I find this exorbitant and unjust. The benefit these commuters offer the city is invaluable. It seems unfair to add another financial burden, especially when New York already takes so much in taxes from its citizens. Many of my Hudson Valley colleagues have recognized this, and we have all offered solutions. By way of example, Assemblyman AJ Beephan from Dutchess County has proposed a toll exemption for the essential workers who commute to the city daily. This reasonable compromise should be passed immediately. Assemblyman John McGowan from Rockland proposes a flat rejection and repeal of new congestion pricing measures. Hudson Valley representatives are clearly looking for fair solutions. At the very least, the MTA must redirect its focus and revise its current congestion measures. Too many individuals commute into the city, relying heavily on these roadways and their relatively affordable toll rates. It’s unfair to impose additional charges in this manner. If New York City seeks to maintain its reputation as a place of opportunity and inclusivity,–as its leadership professes-then equitable policies should apply to all who contribute their skills, labor, and dollars to the city’s economy. If New York State neglects to support our hardworking commuters, especially amidst unprecedented inflation, the mere contemplation of imposing a congestion pricing surcharge is totally unjustified.
