FIGHTING ANTISEMITISM IN NEW YORK

Politics

A Column from the Desk of Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C-Deerpark)

It’s crucial to stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors, especially in light of the recent Passover celebration. As we reflect on this past week, it’s clear that we must address the increasing antisemitism affecting communities nationwide. While this column typically highlights positive stories, we cannot overlook the surge in antisemitic incidents, such as those seen at Columbia University and across the country. Antisemitism is nothing new, and too often, it hits very close to home. The 2019 Hanukkah stabbing in Monsey, stands as a stark reminder of the violence and hatred that Jewish communities can face. Following the terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel in October of last year, there has been a notable rise in antisemitism, often accompanying criticism of Israel’s response. However, it’s crucial to distinguish between political disagreements and discrimination against Jewish Americans. They should not be held responsible for the actions of a foreign government. Antisemitism remains a significant issue on college campuses, impacting Jewish students beyond Columbia University. Given New York’s sizable Jewish population, it’s incumbent upon us to support and protect our Jewish neighbors, particularly during times of tension. While some institutions may attempt to address the issue through logistical measures like moving to hybrid or remote classes, the persistence of antisemitism on campuses nationwide is concerning. College should be a space free from discrimination, where every student, regardless of their background, feels safe and valued.

Let’s recommit ourselves to combating antisemitism in all its forms. By standing with our Jewish friends and ensuring their safety and support, we contribute to a more just and inclusive society. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, regardless of their identity or beliefs.
